VideoM8 support

Get back to creating.

Straightforward help for recording, screenshots, step demos and publishing from the VideoM8 Chrome extension.

Getting started

Pin VideoM8 Recorder from Chrome’s Extensions menu, then open any normal HTTP or HTTPS page before starting a capture.

What works without an account

Recordings and screenshots can stay on your device. You can preview and download them without signing in.

When sign-in is required

Sign in when you publish a hosted share link, save work to your Library, collaborate or view engagement analytics.

Useful shortcuts

  • Alt/⌥ + Shift + R opens the recorder.
  • Alt/⌥ + Shift + S captures a region.
  • Alt/⌥ + Shift + P pauses or resumes.

Protected Chrome pages

Chrome internal pages, the Chrome Web Store and some protected browser surfaces cannot be captured. Switch to a normal website and try again.

Record a video

Choose the surface you want, confirm your devices, then keep control from the toolbar on the page you are presenting.

Current tab

  1. Open VideoM8 and choose Record.
  2. Select the current-tab option and your camera or microphone settings.
  3. Press Start, then use the on-page toolbar to pause, mute, draw, blur or stop.

Window or entire screen

Chrome opens its own secure picker. Choose the exact window or screen you want to share. Cancelling the picker captures nothing.

Camera and microphone

Choose Set up camera & mic in the extension to test devices. VideoM8 does not activate either device simply because a page opened.

Recover an interrupted take

VideoM8 journals recording chunks locally. Reopen the extension after a crash or interruption and use the offered recovery action to preview or download the saved take.

macOS: if a full-screen recording is blank, allow Chrome under System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen & System Audio Recording, then restart Chrome.

Capture screenshots and step demos

Visible, full page or selected area

Choose Screenshot, select the capture type, then crop, annotate, highlight, blur or redact in the editor. Copy and download remain local.

Capture menus or hover states

Use the screenshot delay, prepare the page while the timer runs, and keep the menu or hover state visible until capture completes.

Step demo

Start a step demo and click through the workflow. Choose Done to edit captions, reorder or remove steps, then download locally or publish one share link.

Full-page capture stops early

Keep the tab open and avoid scrolling while VideoM8 captures it. Very dynamic or protected pages may block automated scrolling; use visible-area captures as a fallback.

Publish a share link

Publishing uses VideoM8’s hosted service, so an account is required for storage, rate limits, Library access and engagement features.

Publish a recording

  1. Stop the recording and review the result.
  2. Choose Publish link.
  3. Sign in or create an account if prompted.
  4. Wait for upload to complete, then open or copy the share URL.

Publish a screenshot

Finish your annotations, choose Publish link, sign in, and wait for the hosted URL. Until you publish, the screenshot stays in extension memory.

Upload failed

Confirm you are signed in at videom8.com, keep the result tab open, and retry. If it continues, download the local file first so your work is safe.

Find published work

Open your Library to rename, organise, edit privacy, download or reopen a published recording, screenshot or demo.

Common fixes

The extension does not start on this page

Check that the page begins with http:// or https://. Reload the page after installing or updating the extension. Chrome internal pages and the Web Store cannot be scripted or captured.

Chrome cannot see my camera or microphone

Open the extension’s camera and microphone setup, allow the requested permissions, and select the intended devices. If a preferred device was unplugged, reconnect it or choose the system default.

The recording has no tab audio

Use current-tab recording and enable tab audio before starting. Window and screen audio availability depends on Chrome and the operating system; macOS does not provide system audio for every capture type.

The toolbar disappeared after navigation

In chrome://extensions, open VideoM8 Recorder’s site access and allow it on the sites you record. Site access lets the toolbar follow the same recording when the tab navigates between domains.

A recording or screenshot still will not publish

Download the local result first, confirm you are signed in, then retry. Email support with the approximate time, page address, Chrome version and the error shown—never send passwords or private recording content unless it is necessary and you intend to share it.

Privacy and permissions

Capture starts only after your action. Local results remain on the device until you choose to publish them.

Site access

VideoM8 uses site access only on the tab where you start a capture, so its toolbar, camera preview, screenshots and step demo can work while you navigate.

Bug report mode

This optional mode captures console messages and network timing for the recorded tab. It does not read request or response bodies or headers, and sensitive values are redacted.
